"not even worth the money" 2008-09-23

I got this, knowing it would be cheaply built, just to tide me over and practice with until I could get a decent tripod. I was still disappointed. It does not have a quick release plate as advertised - you have to unscrew it and it is nearly impossible to get even my skinny fingers in there. The other knobs are just as hard to manipulate.

It only holds 2.5 pounds, according to the box. I'm not even sure it would hold that. I would not put anything larger than a pocket size point and shoot on it. I tried with my dslr and didn't even try to let go of the camera (the head swung down even with my holding onto it and threatened to topple the whole stand).

On the up side (the two stars it got), it is incredibly small and lightweight. It folds up to 14" and maybe 3" across. You could toss it in a bag and go. The legs locked firmly and quickly and did not slide.

I just don't know what you'd use it for unless you were going to do self-portraits with a small point and shoot on vacation. I'd return it, but it's not worth the loss in shipping.

One of the "problems" all photographers face is how to carry their gear that keeps them safe, yet easily accessible. The Lowepro Street and Field waistbelt system is a perfect solution to this problem.

Sometimes when I go hiking, I carry my Canon Digital Rebel in the Tamrac Velocity 7 sling bag. It offers me quick access to the camera. Unfortunately, the Velocity 7 isn't very large and can't hold my Canon 100~400 f/4.5-f/5.6L IS lens, as well as miscellaneous gear, like a water bottle.

That's where the Lowpro Street and Field waistbelt comes in help. I am now able to customize the belt with different pouches, depending on that I kind of gear I want to haul.

The Lowepro Street and Field Pouch 20 is large enough to fit most point and shoot cameras. It has a draw string with lock under the opening flap to provide extra protection. The SlipLock attachment tabs provide two layers of velco attachments, making it easy to remove, yet very secure from accidental removal.

For photographers that often carry a lot of lenses, the Lowepro Street & Field waistbelt and it's various pouches are a sound investment.

"A Solution That Works" 2006-11-11

I have been trying to find a way to easily carry a lot of camera equipment for quite some time. I have tried backpacks, shoulder bags, duffel bags, but none of them really worked all that well. Then I saw the Lowepro Street and Field system with completely customizable pouches, vests, belts, and accessories. It works great, you only get the pouches you need so there is no waisted space and you can organize them however you want according to how often they are used (put frequently used items in easier to access places.)

The variety alone of this system is worth the investment, but the quality and ease of use is also very high which is a big plus. You can get a case for any lens, camera body, or accessory you have. I even have cases for my cell phone and water bottle. One word of caution, be sure to measure your lens with the lens hood on backwards if you use them to make sure that the entire thing will fit into the pouch, because sometimes the lens will fit, but then the lens with the lens hood will not. I often carry 5-6 lenses, extension tubes, teleconverters, extra memory cards and batteries, and a bunch of cleaning supplies and other gadgets, which weights a ton. But when they are evenly distributed on this vest/belt Lowepro system it is actually very manageable.

The only down side is that everyone will be staring at you because you have thousands of dollars of camera equipment strapped to your body. But if you can overlook that, this is the way to go. I have used this system at many zoos without ever having problems, in fact just unzipping a single lens and switching seems safer to me than opening an entire bag of equipment every time you want to switch lenses. Many of the cases also come with a built in rain/snow cover so if the weather changes all of your equipment is not destroyed. You can also put just a few pouches on a normal belt when you are just going to take photos in the back yard or don't need to take all of your equipment, which is nice. I really can't say enough about how much easier this makes traveling with a lot of equipment, if you have been hopelessly searching for a better solution, consider this, you won't regret it.

I got my Suunto X6HR while at an adventure race in Borneo in 2002 and have used it extensively since. I have found the watch to be an overall great training and racing tool over the years. I would agree that battery life is not the strongest feature (my experience has been two per year for the watch and one a year for the chest strap - the battery life is significantly reduced if connected to the computer often). I have raced with this watch, trained with it and just worn it around town and have found it to be one my favorites (I have about eight watches in all!) One issue that does iritate me about it is the altitude setting goes back to zero each time the battery is changed and the process to bring it back up to 6660 (my home altitude) requires several minutes of button pushing/holding. Overall, this has been a great watch for me and I would recommend it to a friend.

I wear my X6HR in a regular environment (office, home), nothing near extreme condition. However, in less than a year, I foung the rubber band of the heart monitor is broken in many placed and the rubber became brittle with many hairline cracks. This is clearly a quality issue with the material used for the watch. In a trip to the Keys, FL, I found that the little rubber ring that holds the band of the watch in place broke in two piece much like what happed to the heart rate monitor band. The band itself also has many small cracks. I am sure the band will break in half sooner or later. The LCD on the watch also became fuzzy when I wear it around beaches. This is supposed to be a watch that you can bring to an expedition, yet it failed miserably in a everyday environment. If you are looking for a tough watch, look elsewhere. My Casio G-shock never gives me any headache that this watch gives.

The X6HR has a great range of functions. However, the user interface and reliability of the product need serious work before its steep pricetag can be justified.

- Bezel buttons give no positive feedback, so you need to look closely at the screen to confirm button presses.

- The HRM function seems both unreliable. Heart rate occasionally drops out or spikes to double for no reason. I've parallel tested with a $30 HRM, which seems more reliable.

- The compass function is unbelievably poorly designed. Instead of drawing a compass on the face, or indicating N/S/E/W points around the bezel, the watch tells you the number of degrees you are facing, or prints N, NW, W, SE, etc on the screen. This is a completely counterintuitive way of displaying the information.

- The PC connection software looks like it was written in the 1990s- provides little functionality and poor usability.

This watch had great promise... but it has proven very disappointing in design.

False advertise ment. This product does not work with the Olympus digital SLR Evolt 500. Sakar anddigital concepts claim that the information provided is not based on their specs. Sakar claims they will be offering a compatible flash May 2007. I requested my money back from Digital Concepts and they refunded my cash. It's a cheaply constructed piece of equipment. I purchased the Olympus made model and I'm pleased.

This camera is value for money. For less than $100USD, it is surely a great bargain deal. Personally, I had owned a DSLR and bought this camera for causal use. I am very happy with the picture quality, especially at low ISO such as 80 and 100.

I always shoot in the P mode as this gives me the most control like changing the white balance and ISO settings. It will be great if this camera offers more modes like shutter/aperture priority mode.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the picture quality and it fit right into my pocket perfectly.

I have found this easy to use, however the set up to e-mail is a little harder then what you may think. Yahoo & GMail will NOT be supported with this. This is the only reason I gave it 3 stars! Those email accounts require a secure "SMTP". This software does NOT offer support for that.

The pictures are good, but storing pictures on a PC is not good when you are not able to secure the pc from being stolen when your house is being broken into.

"A Super Package" 2009-03-02

I purchased the D40 outfit through Cameta Camera and couldn't be more pleased. Everything came just as advertised with no surprises and was shipped timely. I shopped for various digital SLR outfits (Cannon, Olympia, Nikon) for weeks on end and found this to be the best value out there. A note: Regardless of what camera you are considering, be absolutely certain you get to hold it in your hands at one store or another. I nearly got an Olympia outfit until I had a chance to hold the camera - and it simply wasn't comfortable for me.

The camera itself and the two lenses provide me with virtually everything I need, although the telephoto could be a bit longer. I've shot hundreds of pictures in the past month or so using every setting the camera has as well as the manual options and find the results terrific. The camera is fairly intuitive in its controls and buttons but I admit it took me a good couple of weeks at least to read the manual and really understand the capabilities.

I've shot low-light, slow shutter speeds, long exposures (don't forget tripod) action shots and have found the camera very quick with nearly no time needed between shots - unlike my prior point and shoot digitals. You can switch lenses fairly quickly and change your shot settings equally as quick. The only mode I've not had a need to try yet is the rapid fire sequence.

I've already ordered and received several 8 x 10 prints of some pictures and found the megapixel size of this camera renders terrific prints. Why pay for more megapixels if you aren't going to use them?

If this is your first venture into digital SLR photography you can't go wrong with this purchase. In fact regardless of your experience it's a darned good camera and should provide you with hours of shooting joy. I highly recommend the D40 and as long as Camita offers this outfit at this price - you need to buy it.

Let's see: long battery life, great pictures, versatile shooting modes, interchangeable lenses, manual shooting mode available, exposure compensation, flash compensation and all in a nicely packaged outfit (the camera case is especially first-rate)

You can certainly pay much more for a digital SLR but unless you're borderline professional - why would you?

I would 1st like to say that this is my 1st foray into the DSLR world, however, I won't rave about this camera as everyone else has, what I would suggest, is taking a look at the customer images I have posted and judge for yourself! However, one thing I feel I need to say is that I was sooo pleasantly suprised by the camera bag - it's not the standard cheapo stuff!! There is room to fit all that came in the package and then some - and not overly huge! Also, I would be remisce if I did not mention that I was having a hard time choosing between this and the Canon Rebel XSI - have to say.. no regrets so far

After having this camera for about 5 months now I have to say it.. It's absolutely fantastic! I could never go back to a regular point and shoot ever again! There is no comparison in the quality and clarity of the shots and the range of images this camera is able to capture! My best purchase to date! NO REGRETS...WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN THIS PACKAGE!

I bought the D40 because it was considerably cheaper than the D40x, D60 and D80. All of which would have been good cameras, but for an amateur this camera is perfect. It takes perfect pictures, with little-to-no advanced photography skills. I'm used to the user friendly buttons on the point and shoot cameras, like our HP-R967, but this camera was so easy to use. There are advanced setting and great built in options to edit the pictures before and after you take them. I am used to a 3" screen with my point and shoot, but the 2.5" screen is more than enough on the D40.

What I like about the camera:

-The fast response time. Just a second or two from being off to a flash picture.

-The high quality LCD screen. Even in full daylight you can review your pictures.

-Impressive autofocus, very sharp

-Menu options to edit your pictures after you take them. Red eye, cropping, B&W, resizing. (Yes, you can resize the picture for emailing from the camera).

-Takes great pictures. I can't find a point-and-shoot that compares, even a 10MP.

What I don't like:

-You can't use the LCD as a picture preview. You can only look through the viewfinder.

-It doesn't take rapid shots in quick succession. There is probably about a 1.5-2 second delay.

-The plastic feel of the movable parts. e.g, the battery cover and dials seem flimsy. My old film Nikon SLR had the same issue, so maybe it's just me.

Since it's relatively cheaper to buy this camera, I would recommend you buy some accessories that would really enhance your photos. My theory is you can take a GREAT picture with a cheaper camera if you do it correctly. That means lens filters, zoom lenses, speedflash (a MUST), extra battery, rubber camera skin, and loads of memory (4Gb card). Funny thing about filters: I read an article about the folks who did the movie Blair Witch Project. They did that movie with a $300 camera with $600 worth of filters. I believe that. I have $10 UV filters on the 18-55mm lens with a Nikon Speedflash and you would think this is a $4000 camera. I would also buy the cheap remote control, it's a much more impressive way to take your own pictures than the stressful timers. The timer works just fine on this, but the remote works better. I spent $800 on the camera kit with extra lens and all of the aforementioned accessories on Amazon. . You can't buy many decent camera and lens combos for that.

The 6 Megapixel Nikon D40 is targeted for those who want a relatively compact and light camera yet having most of the important SLR features. The D40 is priced reasonably (cheaper than D50/D80 and Canon Rebel XTi). In my opinion, if you are still considering whether to get a point and shoot camera or a DSLR, the D40 will be a better choice than any point and shoot camera, by far, even those with 8MP or 10MP. But if you are already deciding to get a DSLR or you want more control of the picture taking experience, then I would recommend you to also test the D50 and/or D80 first before deciding to buy the D40. I want you to make sure that you know what you will get (and not get) with the D40. Don't get me wrong though, the D40 is an awesome camera, and I don't think you will regret buying one. There are some limitation with the D40 which shouldn't bother most people, for example, the D40 doesn't have dedicated button to change picture quality, white balance or ISO settings (which generally only professional/enthusiast will care). Once you understand (and accept) its limitation, the D40 is a potent and exciting photography machine.

Just like all its (DSLR) siblings, the D40 powers on instantly and take pictures with almost no shutter lag which are the major advantages of a DSLR over a point and shoot camera. In addition to the P,S,A,M mode, the picture quality of the auto settings (auto, child mode, landscape etc) are also very good. With 2.5 frames per second you can capture movement progress in sports like football, basketball, baseball etc. Also great to photograph your family or child (child mode). The D40 is a great all around camera.

Some notable new features:

1. Auto (no flash) mode. Without this mode the flash will pop-up (on all other pre-programmed mode) even when you don't want to use flash (which can be annoying). The internal flash will not pop up automatically with the P,S,A,M settings.

2. In camera editing capability such as black and white, sepia and some filter effects etc. While sounds gimmicky, these features are useful especially for those who doesn't have Adobe Photoshop (or other image editing software).

To date, D40 is the smallest and lightest among all the Nikon DSLR (even smaller than the Canon Rebel XT/XTi, however the D40 is more ergonomics). I believe that choosing a camera that fits comfortably with your hands is important. Therefore, I recommend people to test the camera before buying (even if you want to buy online, please do go to a physical store and test the camera first whenever possible).

The D40 has only 3 (horizontal) autofocus point (5 for D50 and 11 for D80). If you know "The Rule of Thirds", the additional AF points above and below the center focus point (available in D50 and D80) are handy to help create the horizontal third line. However, the 3 horizontal AF point in D40 is still helpful to create the vertical third line. Also one can focus with the middle AF point and after the focus is lock then move the frame upwards/downwards to create the horizontal third line. Just make sure the exposure level is still accurate when you move the frame after you lock the focus.

About the 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens: A good lens producing sharp photos (though not a very fast lens). Also decent for close-up/macro photography. Lens uses internal focus technology and focusing operation is silent. A very decent kit lens.

Lens compatibility: Notice that with D40, autofocus function will not work for non AF-S/AF-I lens. If you already have non AF-S/AF-I Nikon lenses and want a backup or replacement camera, you will be better off buying D50, D70s or D80. If you buy the D40, it will be convenient to stick with AF-S and AF-I type lenses. I'm not sure why Nikon choose this route for the D40 (whether to enable smaller size camera or from now on Nikon will only make AF-S lens compatible camera). There are a lot of good Nikon AF-S lenses (price range added: low, medium, high) that are fully compatible with the D40 such as:

High priced lens ($1000+) are usually pro level lens which usually have better construction, faster (f-stop), and produce better quality picture. However, often times, lower price lens will serve your needs just fine. I think it is important to know what you want to use the camera for before deciding which camera and lens to buy.

Image quality of the D40 is very good which is #1 factor that I look for in a digital camera.

Here are the pros and cons of the D40 in my opinion:

Pros:

1. Nice out of the camera result picture quality

2. Affordable price

3. Compact size and light weight

4. Large and bright 2.5 inch LCD

5. 2.5 frames per second

6. B/W, Sepia, several more in-camera editing features.

7. Instant power on, fast autofocus and no shutter lag

8. Noise is acceptable at high ISO settings. Auto ISO settings available.

9. Great 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens.

10. Great battery life (400+ on a single charge. 1000+ if flash is not used).

11. Auto (flash off) mode available

12. 1/500 flash sync

Cons:

1. No direct button to change QUAL, WB and ISO settings

2. Grip comfortably but might be a bit too small for some people

3. No top LCD and no front command dial

4. Autofocus will not work with non AF-S or non AF-I lenses (such as the 70-300m G and 50mm f/1.8D lens)

5. No AF/MF switch (have to use the switch on the lens)

6. Only 3 autofocus point

7. 6 Megapixel (More Megapixel needed to print larger than 12 X 18 at 300 dpi)

8. No night landscape mode in pre-programmed settings

9. No in camera image stabilization (like Sony and Pentax) but Nikon has lenses with it (VR).

10. No depth-of-field preview button

In conclusion, the D40 is perfect for those who want high quality pictures, more control (than a point and shoot camera), and have a DSLR experience (instant power on and no shutter lag), without having to carry a bulky camera. And unless you are shooting sports/actions professionaly (which faster focusing processor, faster frames per second and larger memory buffer might be needed), the D40 is pretty much all you will need.

On the plus side the 4GB SecureDigital Card gives you tons of storage - on the recommended setting, it has room for over 2K photos. This is a big WOW factor. The camera is very easy to use and has as much flexibility as any amature could want. It has point and shoot simplicity with complete autofocus, autoflash, autoexposure and auto white balance,and other features not mentioned, or if you choose, you can manipulate each of these features manually. The lenses are Nikon quality. On the negative side, it would be nice to include the EP-5 AC Adpter Connector ($44) and the EH-5 AC Adapter ($65) and the video cable ($10) in the package. Other than that, for the non professional this is a good package and I feel okay about recommending it to someone that would like to move up from a point and shoot to a SLR. All in all, a good deal.

"Affordable and great little cameras" 2008-09-14

I love these little cameras. I have one hooked up to my dvd set top recorder and they are wonderful and the sound is excellent. They tend to get fussy about moisture or high humidity but we have ours inside a birdhouse and really enjoy the night time visitors having dinner. They don't really show excellent color at night but you can still see in fairly good detail. The manufacturer does tell you about the humidity and not letting them get wet. We have found if humidity or rain does fog up the internals that if you bring it in and let it dry they normally will function again. We had one that lasted us for 5 years no problem till we forgot to put it back in the bird house. During the daytime picture quality is every bit as good as regular TV. Mic picks up further than you would expect. We actually have it in a bird feeder with plexiglass over it to keep out the elements and the feeder is specifically used for the camera.

"Huge Kit, Little Price" 2008-03-14

I was looking for a zoom lens from about 50mm to 300mm. The cheapest decent one was going to cost at least $400. I found this kit and decided to buy it after some long and careful consideration. After getting the kit and playing with it, I am very impressed. There is a 70 - 300mm zoom lens and a 28 - 80mm lens both Tamron's. The lenses are great, very quiet, fast zooming and focusing. And that's not all. A 4Gb card. I already have one that is valued at over $300 and know that you can store up to 900 pics. So now I have another. I already have a great 6' tripod but the one in this kit, although only goes up to 5', has a much better macro capability. It gets the camera lower to the ground. The bag is ok but not water resistant as my new lenses found out. Be warned. Plus there are extras such as cleaning materials, protectors, a spare battery and so on. This kit is a must for the beginner and I believe also for the intermediate. Fantastic price. Try and get all the contents seperately for a better price.

It expands but is not elastic, so it will not hold a slightly smaller camera snugly. And the "magnetic" click is very weak, hardly holds at all. I actually bought this case for my Treo 680 and it works great. The quality is excellent and it fits my phone snugly. The belt clip stays on well and I have found it doesn't slide easily. The strap is stretchy so it can be stretched and still stay in the snap that uses a magnet.

I purchase this Sanyo a few weeks ago. I was very disappointed in the quality and the many problems I had with this camera.

1. I have Visa, and not sure if Visa was causing my problem I am not sure.

The software that came with the camera is horrible. Every time I loaded one of my video file into Ulead program . The program will tell me " the program isn't responding" Ulead website is extramural hard to understand, and not even sure what I was looking for for a update if there was one.

2. After messing with Ulead I was lucky to be able to burn one video, but when trying again the program crash on me again. It something to do with

mepg4 format . Windows doesn't like it for some reason. I think that a mac format. Maybe if own a Mac the software would work better.

I put the burn disc in and the menu look good, but when I push play . OMG

Horrible picture. It seem like my video had snow on the picture. My cell phone camera has better quility then this camera.

Its a nice small device, but it only worth 20 dollars.

Save your money and buy a different video Camera.

I return the item and was able to get my full refund.

I just don't have time to troubleshoot and solve Sanyo problems.

I think they need to take a serious look at this video camera.

It would be a nice started kit for someone not interested in expanding their system. But the Tripod is of poor quality for the weight of the camera and lens (in fact it broke after i used it once...the key lock broke). The Camera bag is good if you have just one camera and a small lens.

The extra card, battery, and the extra filter lens are nice though! Oh yeah. The remote shutter release has been my most utilitzed item.

I sent a letter to the vendor, 47 St. Photo asking why they continue to advertise this item as being `In Stock' and am still waiting for an answer that I doubt will ever come. This is just not right my friends, I'm sure there is a word for this type of advertising.

This lens shows too much color aberation and blur to be useful. I compared the 2x photo at the same scale as photo without lens. The color fringing and loss of detail was obvious and standard lens with digital zoom showed more detail. I received a no hassel, prompt refund and purchased a fixed mount lens (avail for A-series Canon, at least) for 50% more money. This would have been a 1 star rating but for the low price and good build quality and cosmetics.

just like the guy before me, I just wanted the Nikkor 55-200mm lens, the bag and the Card reader. The lens itself is $219,99 the Bag is around $30,00 and the card reader can be $5,00. The lens it self is great. As you might have already known it makes a very eerie sound when VR is on. Its very quiet but very eerie. It does not bother me too much. So I thought I would buy this as it comes with lot of other additional items just for a little more. All the other items were not branded and were of less quality. The Lint free tissue was not lint free and when I cleaned my lens, it left lot of lint, so I had to use a good cloth to remove it. The EN-EL9 battery is also a local made. Better you could buy only those things you want and not this big chunk. This just occupies more space. If you are planning to buy a D40 or D60 newly, then better buy a package which comes with the additional lens. Such package generally has the Nikon Bag also. That package is better as it does not have unnecessary accessories and thereby less cost. For sure, shipment came on time, lens was excellent, bag was excellent, well packed.. but not worth as a package.
